There are many differences between coaching an ELC team and teaching a regular course. With regular courses, the professor does much of the talking. As an ELC coach, we try to keep quiet as much as possible so the students can grow and develop. The coach will intervene when the team is wandering off task, cannot get any traction, or is falling behind. The role of coach is very rewarding to me. I teach UBUS 310, which involves between 800 and 1,000 students each year. I know very few of them, and the ones I do know, I cannot get to know them very well. As an ELC coach, I become quite close to all my team members, and, individually, they often come to me and appreciate me mentoring them. I also get to see the students grow tremendously over the fifteen weeks. Almost like watching your own kids grow, but in fast forward!!
