A team of Northern Illinois University students recently worked as consultants for Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. The consulting project was conducted through the Experiential Learning Center in the NIU College of Business. For the last decade, teams operating out of the ELC have been “hired” by companies looking for fresh insight into a business issue. Companies such as Caterpillar, Wal-Mart and McDonalds have each used multiple ELC teams over the past decade.
The projects allow students, who are drawn from departments throughout the college and across the university, to apply concepts that they are learning in the classroom to actual business challenges. Along the way, they also learn lessons about team work, leadership, researching, presentation skills and more.
In summer of 2011, the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc., sponsored by McKesson, requested a Northern Illinois University Experiential Learning Center team to define and create a comprehensive social media strategy, evaluate the current JLKD website and make recommendations for an ongoing digital presence. After contributing more than 1,200 hours into the project, the team of NIU Junior Consultants successfully presented the findings and recommendations on November 29th at McKesson and provided the JLKD with a comprehensive report. For more information on the JLKD, please take a look at the current website at www.jlkd.org and follow up on the implementation of the NIU ELC recommendations.
About 50 students participate in ELC projects each year gaining real world experience and a unique experience to place on their resume.
